My first adventure setting the awesome poetry of Rick Mulkey. This series of poems addresses the life of Felix Mendelssohn's sister, Fanny Hensel. I chose to set the beginning and ending poems of the cycle, portraying Hensel, respectively, as a child prodigy and then at the end of her life. Quotations from the music of J. S. Bach and Hensel, herself, (as well as an instrumental interlude modeled after brother Felix's "Songs Without Words") provide the musical structure for the piece.
