Tuladandsana

stereophonic sextet for cellos

7:30

Commissioned for the cellists of the Spartanburg

Philharmonic as part of the orchestra's "espresso" series, Tuladandasana is the term applied to the "balancing stick pose" in yoga. This pose requires careful balance between three points—the head, the core, and the feet. Likewise, in this sextet, a similar balance must be created between the three pairs of cellos, situated on the right, left, and center of the stage, which must coordinate (and swap) their distinct musical materials.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I don't do yoga--I just learned the term and thought it described neatly what I was going for in this piece.)
