The title is the translation of French word, radieuse. This piece was written for Ensemble Radieuse, and it is a piece that is both calming and turbulent at times. The long, sparkling piano intro that opens the piece is perhaps the simplest thing I will ever write, yet it works a wonderful magic with the build-up it provides. I believe the entire piece is written in different types of five-beat meters (this is the piece where I came up with the phrase "5/4 is the new 4/4"), but there is a terrific sense of rhythmic propulsion in much of this piece. Thisis one of those pieces that I wrote, set aside for a long time, then re-heard and remembered how awesome I think it is. The members of Ensemble Radieuse play this piece wonderfully.
