Scott Robbins, composer
Suite with Tweets
7:00-8:00
For years, I've assigned monophonic works to my composition students, but I've never done one myself...until this one. In 2015, I wrote a one-minute, 3-voice fugue for solo flute. At the time, I thought it was simply a composition exercise. Then, Iwona Glinka recorded it for her "One Minute" CD and, in 2017, I decided to flesh out the fugue by creating a work inspired by a Baroque suite. I added a Prelude (seemed obvious), and a Sarabande. Then, in a nod to the 21st century, I incorporated two short movements, each consisting of exactly 140 notes, which I entitled "tweets" (like Twitter, get it?). It all adds up to a really cool, single-player composition.
